BJP's Nupur Sharma to be summoned by Mumbai Police over Prophet Muhammad remarks
Mumbai/IBNS: The Mumbai Police will summon former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma to record her statement in connection with the FIR lodged against her for allegedly making derogatory remarks against Prophet Muhammad, media reports said.
Addressing a press conference at the Mumbai Police headquarters, police commissioner Sanjay Pandey said that an FIR was already registered against Nupur Sharma in the Pydhonie police station.
"We will call her to record her statement as per law and the legal procedure will be followed," he said.
The Mumbai Police registered a case against Nupur Sharma on May 28.
The BJP had already suspended its spokespersons, Nupur Sharma and Naveen Kumar Jindal, over their comments on the Prophet Muhammad that also triggered massive violence in Uttar Pradesh, saying it "strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities".
"During the thousands of years of the history of India, every religion has blossomed and flourished. The Bharatiya Janata Party respects all religions. The BJP strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion," it said in a statement on Sunday.
"The Bharatiya Janata Party is also strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy," it had said.
"India's Constitution gives the right to every citizen to practise any religion of his/her choice and to honour and respect every religion," the party had said.
Sharma was charged under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 295A (deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs), 153A (promoting enmity between groups) and 505(2) (statements conducing to public mischief), the police had said.
