Calgary to see bitter cold days after almost 2 years

Calgary, Dec 7 (IBNS): A bitterly cold arctic air swept through the prairies making Calgary's temperatures plummet. The city which was unusually warm this year is now experiencing coldest temperatures in 2 years with daytime highs expected to sit anywhere between -15 ÌŠ C to -24 ÌŠ C and overnight lows of -26 ÌŠ C (feels like -33 ÌŠ C with wind chill).

“The artic air that has entered Alberta is American air, but its coming from Alaska with some help from Siberian air”, says David Philips, senior climatologist with Environment Canada.

Freezing temperatures, heavy snow and wind chill is a safety concern for all travelers in the city.

The Trans- Canada Highway at several points was closed due to heavy snowfall and slippery roads. Environment Canada also warned poor driving conditions with near-zero visibility near certain areas of the city.

Drivers were also advised to postpone non-essential travels until weather conditions improve and plan their trips accordingly with extra-time in hand.

Several Calgary facilities, outdoor activities and events have been cancelled in the city such as the ski and snowboard hill at Canada Olympic Park and the Zoo Christmas Lights at the Calgary Zoo.

It is a bad news for Calgary students as well as they might be stuck inside their classrooms during recess and playtime breaks. As per Calgary Board of Education, children must be kept inside when the temperature drops below -18 ÌŠ C.

Frigid weather conditions affect the homeless the most across the world. In Calgary, agencies are taking extra step and working extra hours to prevent any tragedies to the homeless.

While Calgary is coping with the harsh winter conditions, this vibrant city is all set for a beautiful white Christmas that is just around the corner.
