Centre and Assam govt jointly prepare road map for draft NRC publication

Guwahati, Oct 24 (IBNS): Union government and Assam government on Tuesday jointly prepared a roadmap to combat any untoward incident anticipated during the days leading to publish of draft National Register of Citizens (NRC).

During a high level meeting held in New Delhi in presence of Union home secretary Rajiv Gaura, Assam chief secretary VK Pipersenia, Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay, ADGP Pallav Bhattacharya, Mukesh Agarwala and other top officials of the Union home ministry and state home department, both centre and state government had jointly prepared a roadmap for completion of draft NRC.

Following the high level meeting, Assam DGP Mukesh Sahay said that the roadmap has been prepared to deal with any situation as many obstacles raised ahead of draft NRC publication.

"Both Union and state government will act together towards completion of NRC and adequate measures have been arranged across the state," Sahay said.

The Assam DGP further said that, more meetings will be held to discuss law and order related issues.

Recently, the IB alerted the Union home ministry, Assam home department and Assam police that some foreign assist elements are trying to create disturbance situation in the state ahead of draft publication of NRC.

Ahead of the draft publication, the state coordinator for the NRC presently updating the 1951 list under the supervision of the apex court to detect undocumented immigrants from Bangladesh, Prateek Hajela had submitted a report before the Supreme Court on October 12 and mentioned that, out of 47.09 lakh applicants who have submitted Panchayat certificate to get included in NRC, 17.40 lakh were original inhabitants.

The top official of the state home department said that, Assam police and other security agencies have monitored the situation and arranged adequate security measures across the state to prevent any untoward situation.

The Supreme Court asked the state coordinator office for the NRC to publish the draft NRC on December 31 next.
