Centre asks J & K Govt. to pursue all cases against Masarat Alam
"All 27 cases against Alam should be rigorously pursued and the (Jammu and Kashmir) government should take steps to challenge bail to him in those cases," Home Minister Rajnath Singh told the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
The Modi government faced opposition fireworks as the J & K government, headed by BJP's ally PDP, released Masarat from jail without the knowledge of the centre. An embarrassed Modi denied opposition allegations that his government was privy to the decision to free Alam. He had told Parliament that the country's security was the foremost priority for his government.
Alam had been granted bail in all 27 cases against him but had been kept in jail under the Public Safety Act, which allows detention for up to two years without trial.
The home minister said the J&K government has told the Centre that there were no grounds for Alam's further detention.
Singh had earlier this week also gave statements in both Houses on the Alam issue.
