Champai Soren-led coalition government wins trust vote in Jharkhand assembly

The Champai Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha-Congress coalition government comfortably won the floor test in the Jharkhand assembly on Monday.

The alliance won the test after it got 47 votes in its favour in the 81-member assembly.

The majority mark in the assembly was 41.

The test became necessary after a new government under the leadership of CM  Champai Soren was sworn-in recently just months ahead of the Lok Sabha polls.

Ending the impasse in Jharkhand politics following Hemant Soren's arrest, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha veteran leader Champai Soren took oath as the CM last week.

Hemant Soren terms his arrest as 'black chapter' in Indian democracy

Describing his arrest as a black chapter in Indian democracy, former Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday alleged in the state Assembly that the Raj Bhavan was "involved some way or the other" in the "well-planned script".

"I would like to say that the night of January 31 is a black night, a black chapter in Indian democracy. This is the first time in the country that an incumbent Chief Minister was arrested. I don't know of any precedent," Soren told the House during the discussion of the trust vote sought by Chief Minister Champai Soren.

The Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) leader, who was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on January 31 after over seven hours of grilling in connection with a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam, arrived in the House on Monday to participate in the floor test.

Hemant Soren had stepped down as the Chief Minister soon after his arrest on Wednesday last, and the JMM and the ruling coalition MLAs elected Champai Soren as their legislature party leader within hours.
