Chandan Mitra quits BJP amid speculations of joining Trinamool Congress

New Delhi, July 18 (IBNS): Senior journalist and two-time Rajya Sabha MP Chandan Mitra has quit the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and is reportedly set to join the Trinamool Congress.

"I have given my resignation. But I have not decided whom I will join, or when. I am not going to disclose that," Mitra told ANI.

He, however, did not comment on his reported move to join the TMC.

A section of the media has reported that Mitra is set to join Mamata Banerjee's party on July 21 when it holds the annual mega rally this Saturday to mark Martyr's Day - to commemorate the 1993 Kolkata firing - outside Victoria House in the heart of Kolkata,

If that comes true, it will be a big catch for TMC given the fact that Mitra was considered an important functionary of the BJP at the national level.

Mitra had contested the 2016 West Bengal assembly election from the Hooghly seat on a BJP ticket and lost his deposit.

Mitra submitted his resignation to BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday.
