Shillong/UNI:  Curfew has been extended for the next four days from 0600 hours on Monday in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district in view of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.

However, fair price shops under National Food Security Act (NFSA) and non-NFSA, identified groceries, vegetable, fruit, meat vendors, confectionery and stores selling essential items in all localities of Shillong agglomeration will open from 0900 hours to 1600 hours on Monday and Tuesday to enable residents to purchase essential commodities.

East Khasi Hills District Magistrate, Matsiewdor War Nongbri said the curfew was clamped under Section 144 CrPC read together with Regulation 3 of the Meghalaya Epidemic Diseases, COVID-19 Regulations, 2020.

Nongbri said Curfew was extended as pre-emptive measures and to take more stringent steps to ensure social distancing and home quarantine so that the pandemic does not spread to East Khasi Hills and the state as a whole.

She said the Curfew will expire at 0600 hours of April 10.

In her order, the district magistrate asked people to maintain social distancing and avoid overcrowding in shops during the two days.

However, Nongbri emergency services, security forces, medical team, print and electronic media, banks, ATMs and treasuries, petrol pumps and essential services are exempted from the Curfew.

She said movement of vehicles carrying essential commodities, security forces and medical equipment are also exempted, however, driver and attendants of the vehicles will be medically screened as per laid down protocols.
