Cyclone Amphan: PM Modi announces Rs. 500 crore as 'advance assistance' for Odisha

Bhubaneswar/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday announced Rs. 500 crore as an "advance assistance" for the eastern state of Odisha which was hit by Cyclone Amphan along with West Bengal.

After taking an aerial survey of the affected areas in the state, Modi said, "At the same time, there has been damage to property, which we reviewed in a meeting today. All possible assistance will be provided by the Centre to ensure quick relief work. Rs. 500 crore will be given to Odisha as advance assistance."

 

"Everyone is fighting COVID-19. In such a time, we had a super cyclone in some parts of India. This became very worrying. At the same time, due to the well established processes in Odisha, many lives were saved. I congratulate the people and Odisha government," he also said.

At least seven people in Odisha have died in Cyclone Amphan which was originated in the Bay of Bengal.

Earlier in the day, Modi announced Rs. 1000 crore "advance assistance" to West Bengal which was devastated by the cyclone.

In West Bengal at least 80 people died in Amphan as the cyclone caused widespread destruction in southern part of the state.
