Kolkata/IBNS: Severe cyclone Remal has caused havoc destruction in West Bengal, claiming two lives and leaving about 2 lakh people displaced, media reports said.

Md. Sajid, 50, died after a chunk of concrete fell on him at Entally in Kolkata while 80-year-old Renuka Mondal lost her life after an uprooted tree fell on her in Frazerganj, South 24 Parganas.

The Sagar Island in South 24 Parganas was the hardest hit after the cyclone made landfall at around 11 pm last night.

The storm was accompanied by heavy downpour throughout Sunday and the whole night leading to Monday.

A chimney pole from a nearby factory fell on a number of cars leading to their damages in Baranagar, as reported by a local media this morning.

Heavy rains continue to lash various districts of West Bengal. Several parts of Kolkata have already been waterlogged.

Rains are still accompanied by storm winds, hours after the cyclone passed the state.

Metro services, which are mostly underground in Kolkata, were curtailed over waterlogging in the tracks. Trains and flight services, which were halted, have started operating.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee posted on X, "Stay home and stay safe. We are there for you, today and always. This storm shall pass too."

Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a meeting to review the preparedness for cyclone Remal over North Bay of Bengal at his residence at 7, Lok Kalyan Marg on Sunday.

The Prime Minister was briefed that the National Crisis Management Committee is in regular touch with the Government of West Bengal.
