Guwahati, Aug 9 (IBNS): India's Science-based Ayurveda major Dabur India Ltd on Wednesday announced the formal launch of its Community Development initiatives in Tezpur in northern Assam’s Sonitpur district.

Dabur had commenced its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) activity in Tezpur earlier this year by adopting a government-run primary school Dhekidol LP School in Sonitpur district and formally handed over the school to the local administration after undertaking a major revamp of the school facilities.

The revamp included upgrading the classrooms and building, revamping the sanitation infrastructure for students besides construction of a concrete boundary wall.

The revamped school was handed over the school and district administration at a ceremony held in Tezpur in presence of  Sonitpur DC Manoj Kumar Deka, SP PP Singh, senior officials from Dabur India Ltd, including Vice President-HR and IR Partho Ganguly and Dabur Tezpur Unit Head JS Pathak.

The development work was carried out through Dabur’s CSR arm Jivanti Welfare and Charitable Trust.

Addressing the gathering, Ganguly said that, Dabur set up base in Assam with its manufacturing unit in Tezpur earlier this year.

“Even before rolling out the first product from our Tezpur unit, we commenced work on community development in the region. It gives me great pleasure to see the fruits of our labour in CSR with the inauguration of this newly revamped school. This is just the first of several CSR initiatives that Dabur has planned for the region,” Ganguly said.

The school revamp was undertaken after detailed discussions with the school authorities and keeping their specific needs in mind.

“After a detailed survey of the region, Dhekidol LP School in Tezpur was identified as the first beneficiary school for our CSR interventions in Assam. After discussions with the school administration and local authorities, we commenced a host of development activities in this school, which includes constructing a boundary wall around the school, revamping the classrooms and donating desk-benches and almirahs for students. Repair and refurbishment of the existing toilet blocks in the school was also initiated as part of the development agenda. Our intention is to develop and support this school as a Model School for the region,” Ganguly said.

The school building and classrooms have been completely revamped and new a play area has also been created for school children.

Messages related to Health, Hygiene and Education have also been painted on the walls under the Building as Learning Aid (BaLA) programme.

Access to basic education is the most fundamental right of any child. But an equally important right is access to basic and hygienic sanitation facilities and a healthy learning environment in schools.

Going forward, Dabur plans to roll out a host of development initiatives aimed at improving the livelihood of rural populace, particularly women and children, in the region.

These include setting up Vocational Training Centres, Adult Literacy Centres and construction of household toilets.
