Kolkata/IBNS:  Members of the BJP's youth wing clashed with the police in Kolkata as they were demonstrating against the increase of dengue cases in the city in recent times.

The police reportedly resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control as the protesters were marching to Kolkata Municipal Corporation headquarters in downtown Esplanade.

They had planned to gherao the Kolkata Municipal Corporation, but when stopped by barricades near the civic body headquarters, the protesters started throwing water bottles and stones. The police had retaliated with water cannons, reported NDTV.

BJYM Bengal unit President Debjit Sarkar has been hospitalised. reports said.

BJP said 35 people, which included 12 women activists, were detained by the police.

The party said more than 60 members are currently undergoing treatment in hospitals.

"BJYM Karykartas were beaten mercilessly by for protesting against Mamata Banerjee's negligence in tackling dengue which has seen 44,000 dengue cases all over West Bengal," a party official said.

The KMC is currently run by Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress.

The TMC and the BJP have been engaged in a power tussle with the rise of the saffron brigade in Bengal.

In Lok Sabha polls this year, the BJP clinched 18 seats from the state leaving the TMC to go on a course correction to curb the Hindu nationalist party.
