New Delhi, Nov 26 (IBNS): On the occasion of the country's Constitution Day, President Ram Nath Kovind on Monday said the duty of safeguarding and strengthening constitution is a shared enterprise among the judiciary, executive and legislature.

He said: "The duty of safeguarding and strengthening the Constitution is a shared enterprise among the judiciary, the executive and the legislature, in partnership with the people of India."

Aiming at steps to remove social inequalities, Kovind said: "At the simplest level, it implies the removal of societal imbalances and the harmonisation of rival claims and needs of different communities and groups. Social justice is about providing equal opportunities."

The President spoke about political justice in the elections. "Political justice in the electoral arena does not stop with free and fair elections and with universal franchise. Or with the right of every citizen who meets age and other criteria to offer himself or herself as a candidate."

Kovind also referred to the disruptions often carried out by political parties in the parliament, which is called as the temple of democracy.

He said: "Disruptions in parliamentary proceedings are an unfortunate occurrence. Some have suggested that these too be seen as encroachment on the citizen’s understanding of justice."

The union government's step to increase transparency in "campaign finance" has been lauded by Kovind.

The president said: "Improving transparency in campaign finance, as the govt is trying to do, is also an example of promoting political justice."

Kovind praised the Indian judiciary for trying to solve the backlogs prevail in the courts.

He said: "When the judiciary tries to find solutions to frequent adjournments, simply to delay cases and inconvenience the less-well-off litigant, it enhances the quality of justice."

Constitution Day:

On Nov 26, 1949, the Constituent Assembly of India adopted the Indian constitution, which came into effect on Jan 26, 1950.

In 2015, the central government declared Nov 26 as the Constitution Day of India.
