New Delhi, Dec 12 (IBNS): The Editors Guild of India on Wednesday announced that it had suspended senior journalist-turned-politician M.J. Akbar till the case of sexual misconduct against him is concluded.

It also announced the suspension of former Tehelka editor Tarun Tejpal for the same reason.

"A majority of the EC members suggested that the membership of Mr Akbar should be suspended. There was also consensus that Mr Tejpal be suspended too, until the conclusion of his trial and the Guild should write to Mr Adhikari to seek his response," the statement said.

On senior journalist Gautam Adhikari, the guild will write to him seeking a reply on the sexual misconduct charges against him.

Akbar (67) had resigned as Minister of State for External Affairs on October 17 after the allegations surfaced. At least 20 women journalists have levelled sexual misconduct charges against him, NDTV said.

A former president of the Editors Guild of India, Akbar was editor of prominent newspapers such as The Telegraph and The Asian Age.

Tejpal was accused of rape by one of his junior colleagues on November 7, 2013.
