Mumbai: Legendary Indian singer Lata Mangeshkar, whose mellifluous voice left fans enchanted for decades, was cremated with full state honours in Mumbai's Shivaji Park, ending a glorious chapter in the musical history of the country.

Lata Mangeshkar, whom her fans often called as the "Saraswati' (Goddess of Art and Education) of music, died at Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai.

Besides her family members, Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari, CM Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar, Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray, NCP supremo Sharad Pawar and MNS leader Raj Thackeray were present at the ceremony.

While, several celebrities like Shah Rukh Khan, Sachin Tendulkar, singer Anuradha Paudwal and lyricist Javed Akhtar were also among the mourners.

The veteran singer was being treated for Covid-19 and pneumonia symptoms for over a month.

The singer, referred to as the Nightingale of India, was admitted to Mumbai's Breach Candy Hospital in January with Covid-19 and pneumonia.

Her symptoms were mild but she was kept in ICU due to her age. Over the weeks, Mangeshkar showed signs of improvement but on Saturday, she was put back on the ventilator after her health deteriorated.

Meanwhile, Indian PM Narendra Modi and other eminent personalities from various fields reached Shivaji Park to attend the funeral of the legend, whose death left millions of people mourned.

The legendary singer had recorded songs in over a thousand Hindi films and has sung songs in over thirty-six Indian languages and foreign languages, though primarily in Hindi and Marathi.

The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was bestowed on her in 1989 by the Government of India.

In 2001, in recognition of her contributions to the nation, she was awarded the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian honour and is only the second vocalist, after M. S. Subbulakshmi, to receive this honour.

France conferred on her its highest civilian award, the Officer of the Legion of Honour, in 2007.
