Ex-J&K Lt Guv GC Murmu appointed as new Comptroller and Auditor General

New Delhi/IBNS: Former Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) Lieutenant Governor GC Murmu, who resigned from his post a day before, has been appointed as the country's new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

Murmu had stepped down from the post of Lt Governor in the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday.

Following his resignation, Manoj Sinha took charge as the new Lieutenant Governor of J&K.

The post of the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) was likely to fall vacant this week as incumbent Rajiv Mehrishi turns 65.

Murmu, a 1985-batch Gujarat cadre officer, had worked with Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was the Gujarat Chief Minister.

Murmu, who was the first Lt. Governor in the Union Territory of J&K, resigned days after a controversy surfaced in media reports quoting him saying that elections in the union territory can be held after the ongoing delimitation exercise.

However, the Election Commission had, in a strongly-worded response, stated that decisions on scheduling elections could only be made by it.

His administration in J&K also faced flak over the restoration of 4G internet services in the Union Territory.
