Ex-Tamil Nadu CM Karunanidhi laid to rest in Marina Beach

Chennai, Aug 8 (IBNS): With full state honours, ex-Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK patriarch Karunanidhi was laid to rest at Marina Beach in Chennai on Wednesday.

Senior politicians of the nation, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress supremo Rahul Gandhi, reached Chennai to pay their last tributes to the southern leader.

A sea of followers and supporters had assembled at the beach to bid their farewell to Karunanidhi.

Karunanidhi was laid to rest next to his mentor Annadurai, reports said.

Draped in a tricolour, the ex-Tamil Nadu Chief Minister was carried from Rajaji Hall to Marina Beachin an open procession.

A sea of his supporters assembled at the venue to bid adieu to the leader.
The iconic southern beach is also the final resting place of several other late political heavyweights which include  Jayalalithaa, DMK founder CN Annadurai and MGR.

Karunanidhi died in Chennai on Tuesday.

He was 94.

From Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Congress president Rahul Gandhi all arrived in Chennai to pay their last homage to the southern politician on Wednesday.

Twitter has been buzzing with posts by politicians, celebrities, and common men as they paid their last tribute to Karunanidhi on the social media.

His body was kept at the Rajaji Hall since morning so that people could paid their tribute to Karunanidhi.

In a tweet, Modi described Karunanidhi as an "extraordinary leader" who devoted life to the cause of the people.

Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also visited the place and paid her respect to Karunanidhi.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami and his cabinet colleagues, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, superstar actor Rajnikanth, actor-turned-politician Kamal Hassan also paid their tributes.
