Fire breaks out at Kerala Secretariat, triggers political row

Thiruvananthapuram/IBNS:  A minor fire broke out at the Kerala Secretariat in Thiruvananthapuram on Tuesday evening.

The fire triggered protests by oppositions and allegations in connection to the gold smuggling case.

No one was injured in the fire that broke out at the political section of the General Administration Department.

Visuals showed officers trying to save files and equipment from the building.

The opposition Congress-led UDF in the state has alleged that the accident was an attempt to sabotage the probe into the gold smuggling case.

Leader of Opposition Ramesh Chennithala and other Congressmen met the Kerala Governor Arif Mohammad Khan to demand an independent probe into the incident.

He and other Congress leaders protested outside the secretariat. Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) also protested.

According to reports, no important files were destroyed in the fire.
