Four dead in Kashmir gunfight, stand-off continues between guerrillas , forces

Srinagar, Feb 20 (IBNS) Three Central Reserve Police personnel and one civilian were killed while 11 others injured after suspected guerrillas attacked a CRPF convoy near Pampore on the outskirts of Srinagar city in Jammu and Kashmir.

After attacking the CRPF vehicle, militants entered into EDI building and holed up their positions and started heavy firing from the building on the security forces.

“At least 120 staffers and students were present in the building. We safely evacuated them but unfortunately one of the civilians Abdul Gani received a bullet in abdomen and hip, later he was Succumbs to his injuries in Srinagar Hospital,” said a police official.

Another police official said that it may take some time to neutralize the guerrillas.

“It is an 8-storey building and there are more than more than fifty rooms. We have been finding ways and means to neutralize these guerrillas which are believed to be two in number,” he said.

Intermittent exchange of fire was reported until the late evening from the spot and the security personnel were ensuring a proper cordon at the encounter site to prevent the militants from escaping.

CRPF spokesman Bhavesh Cahudhury confirmed the death of two troopers.
