Hapur gang rape: NCW writes to Uttar Pradesh top cop, demands strict action

New Delhi, May 14 (UNI): The National Commission of Women has taken suo-moto cognizance of the rape of a widow in Hapur and on Tuesday written to the Uttar Pradesh DGP to take quick and stern action in the case accordingly.

In the letter to the UP police chief O.P. Singh, NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma said that the commission had come across reports in the media, according to which a woman had been allegedly subjected to continuous harassment and gang-rape and when she approached the Hapur police, they refused to register her complaint. The woman then set herself on fire and is battling for her life with 80 per cent injuries.

The commission has expressed serious concern over rise in crimes targeted against women.

"A detailed action-taken the report to be sent to the commission at an early date," the letter further read.

The commission has requested the police chief that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and action shall be taken against the officials at fault.
