Haryana panchayat poll results stun BJP, AAP's presence felt in Congress absence

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) was stunned by the Haryana panchayat poll results where the saffron camp suffered setbacks in some key seats of zila parishads of the state, media reports said.

The BJP, which had contested in 102 zila parishad seats, has won only 22, reports said.

The saffron party has suffered a massive setback in Panchkula where it lost all 10 seats.

The new and emergent Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), which is widely viewed as an alternative to the beleaguered Congress in the opposition space, has won 15 seats of Zila Parishads.

The party has performed well in Sirsa, Ambala, Yamunanagar and Jind.

The Indian National Lok Dal or INLD has won around 14 seats as per various media reports.

The Congress did not contest in the polls.

A senior BJP leader viewed the result as "not a good sign" though the party officially claimed it has performed better overall, The Indian Express reported.

Congratulating his party workers, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP supremo, Arvind Kejriwal, tweeted, "Many congratulations to all the candidates as well as all the workers of Aam Aadmi Party who won the Zilla Parishad elections in Haryana.

"I would appeal to them to work hard for people."
