Haryana poll results: Wrestler-turned-Congress candidate Vinesh Phogat set for a win

Chandigarh/IBNS: Wrestler Vinesh Phogat, who fought the Haryana assembly elections on Congress' candidate, is set for a win on her poll debut.

Phogat, who contested from Julana, is leading by over 5,000 votes after 14 rounds of vote counting. He is set to defeat Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)'s Yogesh Kumar.

While Phogat is flying high on her poll debut, her party Congress has failed to end the uninterrupted 10-year run of the BJP.

As per the recent trends, the BJP is leading in 48 of 90 seats, Congress in 35, INLD 2 and Others in 5. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has failed to open its account.

The BJP made a strong comeback in the counting of votes on Tuesday as it seemed in the morning decks were clear for the Congress, which was leading in around 60 seats, to return to power.

Phogat was one of the wrestlers who were on the forefront of a protest against BJP leader, former Wrestling Federation of India president and ex-Union Minister Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh over sexual harassment charges.

She was again in the middle of a controversy after getting disqualified from the Paris 2024 Olympics wrestling competition for being overweight in the women’s 50-kg category on the morning of her gold medal bout.

Phogat was given the reason that she weighed 100 grams more than the permissible limit of UWW.

Ahead of joining the Congress, Phogat also resigned from Indian Railways.
