Heavy rains cripple Mumbai, alert for more downpour in next 48 hours

Mumbai, Aug 5 (IBNS): Heavy rains crippled life in Mumbai with waterlogging in several parts of the city and suburbs, leading to disruption of rail and road traffic and flight operations, reports said.

According to the IMD, very heavy rains are likely to hit Mumbai and coastal Konkan region over the next 48 hours.

Road traffic came to a near standstill in the morning peak hours after heavy downpour led to waterlogging in parts of south and central Mumbai as well as eastern and western suburbs.

Traffic was largely hit on Eastern Express and Western Express highways.

Suburban train services on Western Railway, Central Railway and Harbour Line were affected with the trains running late as the rain water overtopped tracks near Sion-Kurla and had its effects on the other two lines.

All domestic and international flights to and from Mumbai reported around 30 minutes delay because of the inclement weather.

The adjoining districts of Thane, Palghar and Raigad were also pounded by heavy rains and experienced disruption in road traffic.

Commenting on the heavy rains, actor Amitabh Bachchan posted: "#mumbairains .. yes nature has been aggressive .. but do not panic all will be well .. happens to the best cities in the World !!"

Kabir Bedi posted: "Heavy rains in Mumbai turn our building's lawn into a lake! #mumbairains #Mumbai."
