Himachal Pradesh: 42 dead as bus falls into gorge in Kullu

Kullu, Jun 20 (IBNS): At least 42 people died as a bus fell into a gorge in the Kullu district of Himachal Pradesh, media reports said.

More than 30 people have been injured in the accident.

The number of deaths is likely to rise as several passengers were sitting on the rooftop of the bus.

The private bus was on its way to Gada Gushaini, about 60 km from Kullu, with around 70 passengers.

The bus fell into a 500-foot deep gorge near the Dhoth Morh in Banjar tehsil of the district.

The injured were rushed to the Banjar Civil Hospital and the Kullu district hospital.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the incident and tweeted: "Deeply saddened by the bus accident in Kullu. Condolences to the families of those who lost their lives. I hope the injured recover soon. The Himachal Pradesh Government is providing all possible assistance that is required."

Himachal Pradesh Governor Acharya Devvrat and Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur also expressed grief over the accident.

According to reports, the district administration has announced an immediate relief of Rs. 50,000 each to the families of those killed and the injured.

Most of the victims are residents of the Kullu district.
