Dharamshala: Thousands of devotees and Tibetan monks joined to pray at the  Tsuglagkhang monastery in the Indian state of Dharamshala on Sunday as they wished  for the longevity of spiritual leader Dalai Lama, media reports said on Monday.

Tibetans across the world on July 6 celebrated the 87th birthday of the 14th Dalai Lama. The Central Tibetan Administration (CTA) of the Tibetan government-in-exile organized the Dalai Lama’s 87th birthday in Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, reports ANI.

Hundreds of Tibetans including monks, nuns, school students, and foreigner supporters gathered at the main Buddhist temple to pray for the Dalai Lama.

The Dalai Lama has been living in India  ever since he fled Tibet in 1959 during the Tibetan uprising.

The Buddhist spiritual leader created a government-in-exile in north Indian Himalayan region of Dharamsala.

He even launched a campaign to reclaim Tibet from China.

India had granted asylum to the Dalai Lama in 1959.
