Home Minister Amit Shah speaks to Mamata Banerjee, assures all sorts of assistance to face AMPHAN

Kolkata/UNI: Union Home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday held a telephone discussion with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and assured all sorts of assistance in facing the cyclonic storm ‘AMPHAN’ which is likely to cause massive harm to the Gangetic and coastal districts of West Bengal.

Shah told the CM that already groups of NDRF personnel have been deployed in all vulnerable areas of the state.

The meteorologists have been marked Orange as the cyclonic storms proceeding in the direction of Digha ( Medinipur) and may cause heavy damage to the districts of Kolkata,
Hooghly, Howrah, South and North 24 Parganas, and East Medinipur.

The most vulnerable points are railway tracks, high ways, communication and light posts and kutcha and mud houses with of tin and thatched roofs in remote areas.

DGP Virender and Kolkata Police Commissioner Anuj Sharma have alerted all the officers of the police stations in vulnerable districts and the city and they would be monitoring the situation at the control rooms.

Nearly 30,000 people have been evacuated from risky areas to safe zones in South 24 Parganas.

Plans are to shit around 100,000 people by the day before the storm lashes around mid noon on Wednesday, said an official, for which the miking was on in the coastal district.

Nearly 400 make shift shelters have been erected by now as Bokkhali in south 24 parganas reported drizzling since morning, where the NDRF men have been deposed with
life boats and speed boats to face any eventuality.

A report said some 1000 people have been evacuated from Ghoramara island in near the Sagar Island.

The super cyclonic storm is very likely to move north-northeastwards across northwest Bay of Bengal and cross West Bengal – Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans during the afternoon / evening of May 20.

NDRF chief SN Pradhan said the disaster management squad has taken the prediction very seriously because the force had already experienced with such natural calamity before.

He said they were facing double challenge with existing Covid -19 and now awaiting the super storms, which may move over 200 kms per hour.

IMD DG M Mahapatro said the storms have capacity to leave a trail of destruction along its routes and may swell waters of sea over 3 to 4 meters.
