New Delhi/IBNS: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday paid his tributes to people killed in  1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre.

Modi said the sacrifice of the people will not be forgotten.

"I bow to those martyrs who were killed mercilessly in Jallianwala Bagh on this day. We will never forget their courage and sacrifice. Their valour will inspire Indians for the years to come," Modi tweeted.

The Jallianwala Bagh massacre took place in Amritsar on Baisakhi in April 1919.

Under the direction of Colonel Reginald Dyer, the British Indian Army troops resorted to indiscriminate firing at a crowd of people holding a pro-independence demonstration.

Though the exact number of deaths remain debatable, many estimates put the figure at over a thousand.
