New Delhi/IBNS: India has become the fifth worst coronavirus-hit country globally after its total infection tally surpassed Spain on Saturday.

India has presently 2,46,622 cases of the deadly virus leaving behind Spain with a total of 2,41,310 infections, according to John Hopkins University's live Coronavirus map.

Between Saturday and Sunday morning, India registered the biggest single-day spike of 9,971 cases.

Right now, the United States, Brazil, Russia and the United Kingdom have more cases than India.

The country took over Italy on Friday, which had emerged as the second epicentre of the contagion after China.

Italy is in the seventh position worldwide with 2,34,801 cases of the virus.

Even as the recovery rate in India increased, yet the country has over 1 lakh active cases. The death toll stands at 6,946, according to John Hopkins.

With the easing of restrictions across the country barring the containment zones, India has been witnessing a steep rise of around 8000 cases per day over a period now.

Maharashtra continues to be the worst-hit state followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu.

Gujarat, meanwhile, ranks second in the list in terms of total deaths.

The contagion, which broke in China's Wuhan last year, has affected 6,855,858 people across 188 countries and claimed the lives of 398,321.

The US continues to top the list with 1,919,430 cases of COVID-19 and 109,791 deaths.
