India should have done much better during COVID-19 second wave: Gautam Adani

New Delhi/IBNS: Businessman Gautam Adani has said India, which was devastated by COVID-19 second wave, should have performed better in tackling the crisis, besides cautioning people from falling prey to "voices that demoralise our nation".

In his address to shareholders, Adani, the chairman of the Adani Group, said, "We must admit that every life lost is a tragedy.

"Undoubtedly, our country should have done much better, especially during the deadly wave two. However, as nations of the world marshal their resources to fight the pandemic, I see India being targeted by several critics for not doing more to protect its citizens, especially in vaccination.”

Lauding the country's vaccination drive which is the largest in the world, Adani added, "So our vaccination effort has to be bigger than the combined efforts of 87 countries…. While I admit that criticism is justifiable, we must not fall prey to voices that demoralise our nation or break the morale of frontline workers who have made extraordinary sacrifices."

As per the data provided by the Union Health Ministry on Tuesday, 38.14 crore vaccine doses have been administered so far under Nationwide Vaccination Drive.

Though the financial sector has remained the prime casualty due to the deadly virus, Adani is confident that the country will become a five trillion dollar economy, a goal set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"India will be a five-trillion dollar economy and then go on to be a 15-trillion dollar plus economy, over the next two decades," Adani says.
