India was partitioned solely because of Jinnah and Nehru, says BJP
New Delhi/UNI: The BJP on Wednesday said the country was partitioned in 1947 solely because of personal ambitions of two people - Muhammad Ali Jinnah and Pt Jawaharlal Nehru and lamented that Nehru had even gone against Mahatma Gandhi on this.
BJP spokesman Sambit Patra also dragged Sonia Gandhi's name and family background into India's freedom struggle saying, her father Stefano Maino's family had no contribution into country's struggle for liberation.
"Do vyaktiyon ke karan, desh bata hae (...Only two people were responsible for country's partition)," Patra told reporters here.
"Ambition of two people were responsible....Jinnah No. 1, who wanted power and so he championed the cause of partition and second Pt Jawaharlal Nehru who was in hurry to become Prime Minister, because Mahatma Gandhi had himself said if India has to be partitioned, it has to be done so over my body," he said answering questions.
"The way he tried to overcome objections from Mahatma Gandhi himself, Nehru was responsible for country's partition to push up his ambition," he said adding there can be no denying the fact that Jinnah and the Congress party were responsible for country's partition.
On this backdrop, Patra said the raging debate that the country is witnessing these days on the new Citizenship law is also because of 'partition' of India 'based on religion'.
To a question on senior Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge's statement that no RSS leader ever contributed for India's freedom, BJP spokesman said: "It is true all Indians irrespective of political background had contributed for country's freedom in one way or the other. Which district were Sonia Gandhi's parents fighting for India's freedom".
"....Sonia Gandhi that is Antonia Maino's father Stefano Maino was fighting from which district against the Britishers. Kharge would do well to remember that Sanjay Nirupam has said that Sonia's father Stefaeno Maino was a fascist who worked for Mussolini?," Patra remarked.
