India was recognised as a vibrant democracy and world power due to Jawaharlal Nehru: Manmohan Singh

New Delhi/IBNS: In an apparent attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government, former Prime Minister and Congress leader Manmohan Singh has said India was recognised as a vibrant democracy and world power due to the efforts of its first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and currently a "militant and purely emotional" idea of the country was being promoted under the garb of nationalism, said reports.

Speaking at the launch of a book on Jawaharlal Nehru's works and speeches, Dr Singh said the idea of India being promoted right now excludes millions of residents of the country, whereas Jawaharlal Nehru led India in it formative days accommodating diverse social and political ideas.

"With an inimitable style and a multi-linguist, Nehru laid the foundation of the universities, academies and cultural institutions of Modern India. But for Nehru's leadership, independent India would not have become what it is today," Dr Singh was quoted as saying by NDTV.

A section of people, he accused, are trying to portray Nehru in a false light guided by their prejudice and lack of knowledge of history.

But I am sure, history has a capacity to reject fake and false insinuations and put everything in proper perspective," he opined.

Jawaharlal Nehru's legacy holds enormous significance "perhaps more today than at any other time in our history", Dr Singh said, reported NDTV..
