Guwahati: Indian army apprehended six hardcore militants of National Democratic Front of Bodoland – Sangbijit (NDFB-S) with huge cache of arms and ammunition in Assam’s Kokrajhar district.

According to the reports, based on intelligence input, the Indian army supported by Assam police launched operation against NDFB-S militants in Ripu reserve forest area in Kokrajhar district on Monday.

On receipt of reliable information about presence of NDFB(S) militants in the area of Raimana near Akshaiguri in Ripu reserve forest area, SIKH LI troops of Red Horns Division laid multiple ambushes.

A top official of Indian army said that, last night, the ambush party noticed six individuals moving suspiciously in the area.

“On being challenged, they attempted to escape taking advantage of the twilight and thick foliage. However, the alert troops swiftly reacted to the situation and exercising utter restraint, nabbed all six of them after a short pursuit,” the army official said.

The Indian army official said that on spot questioning revealed that the six individuals were hardcore NDFB-S militants trained in Myanmar.

The nabbed militants were identified as Self styled Cultural Secretary and Deputy Finance Secretary of 39th batch NDFB-S Bahaigya Basumatary alias Belarwm, Ranjolal Wary alias Gobla alias W Raithab, Rubiram Goyary alias G Rwmwgwmw, Julesh Musharay alias M Jujilang, Sailen Borgoyary alias B Sibithao and Rajesh Narzary alias N Railang.

On further questioning, the apprehended militants revealed the location of a temporary camp site close to the spot of apprehension.

Indian army immediately moved to the camp site and conducted a thorough search of the area and recovered one M16 assault rifle, six 7.65 mm pistols, 12 magazines, ammunition, medicines, rations, along with several other war like and administrative stores.

Sporadic inputs about presence of this group were being received from reliable sources of the army for approximately three months.

These six militants belong to the handful of NDFB-S militants who continue to be active in the forested areas of Bodoland Territorial Area Districts (BTAD) and are evading the security forces.

Out of the six apprehended militants, three belong to Kokrajhar district while three are from Chirang district.

The apprehension of this group is a major setback to NDFB-S activities in Kokrajhar district.
