Indian forces ready to counter any eventuality in Ladakh: General Bipin Rawat

Kolkata/IBNS: Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat on Monday said the Indian forces are ready to counter "any eventuality" in Ladakh as China's People's Liberation Army carries out developmental activities in nearby areas of Tibet Autonomous Region.

"I don't think there should be much concern. We on our side are also carrying out similar activity and I wish to assure you we are fully prepared for any eventuality we may face," Rawat said while speaking at a function in Kolkata.

"You are all aware that we are on a stand-off situation in Ladakh and based on that there is some activity that has been ongoing in Tibet," he said said.

"Every nation will continue to make preparations to boost its security based on its strategic interests, General Rawat said. The army, he said is on its toes in Ladakh and Sikkim to counter China. India is 'fully prepared for any eventuality' we may face," he added.

High-resolution satellite imagery accessed by media channels have indicated that China has not only set up a village more than two kilometers within the Bhutanese territory on the eastern periphery of the Doklam plateau, but it has also built a road in the area.

Earlier, India had blamed China over the standoff with the neighbouring country in eastern Ladakh for the past 6 months and accused Beijing of bringing unilateral changes in the status along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

"The situation that we have seen since the last 6 months has been a result of the actions of the Chinese side which has sought to effect a unilateral change in status along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in Eastern  Ladakh. These actions are in violation of the bilateral agreements and protocol on ensuring peace and tranquility along the LAC in the India-China border areas," Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Anurag Srivastava had said during a media briefing.

Meanwhile, the two sides have continued to maintain communication through diplomatic and military channels.
