Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulates France for winning World Cup

New Delhi, July 16 (IBNS): Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday congratulated France for winning the World Cup by beating Croatia in the final on Sunday.

He even appreciated Croatia and called their performance in the tournament as 'historic'.

"An excellent match! Congratulations to France for winning the @FIFAWorldCup. They played wonderfully through the tournament and during the #WorldCupFinal @EmmanuelMacron I also congratulate Croatia for their spirited game. Their performance in the World Cup has been historic.," Modi tweeted.

He congratulated Russian President Vladimir Putin for successfully hosting the grand football event.

"I congratulate President Putin and the people of Russia for the successful organisation of the @FIFAWorldCup 2018. The tournament was memorable and widely watched. @KremlinRussia_E @KremlinRussia," he said.

France defeated Croatia in the final of the World Cup to lift the title.

France earlier won the title in 1998.
