Washington/IBNS: At least 500 Indian students in the United States who were seeking government assistance to return back to India have been asked to stay put wherever they are, said media reports.

India’s Ambassador to US Taranjit Singh Sandhu addressed the concerns of these students in an Instagram live session on Saturday and asked them to remain in their respective locations in US as the international travel remains suspended between the two countries.

At least 2,50,000 Indian students are stuck in the US after they were asked to leave their hostels when the 'stay at home' order was issued by the US government owing to the coronavirus outbreak in the country, according to media reports.

In the Instagram live session, Singh assured of all possible help to the Indian students stranded in the US during the crisis.

He told them the Indian authorities are in constant touch with the US officials to extend their Visas in view of the COVID-19 crisis.

He advised the students to make travel plans back home after the coronavirus situation eases and said the Indian embassy in the US will be in touch with them and take care of their needs.

According to the John Hopkins University's Coronavirus live tracking map, the US currently has 20,604 deaths, leaving behind the death toll of Italy at 19,468.

A whopping number of 529,887 people are infected with the highly contagious virus in the United States.
