India's longest bridge to be named after Dr Bhupen Hazarika says Narendra Modi

Guwahati, May 26 (IBNS): India's longest bridge, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, will be named after legendary Assamese musician Dr Bhupen Hazarika

Sudhakontha Bhupen Hazarika was born at Sadiya.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday made the announcement after inaugurating the Dhola-Sadiya bridge over Brahmaputra river that will ease travel between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.

Modi said that, the bridge locally known as Dhola-Sadiya bridge and the union government decided to name the bridge after Bhupen Hazarika.

The 9.15 km long bridge over Brahmaputra would be called Bhupen Hazarika bridge.

The legendary musician, who passed away in 2011, was awarded the Padmashri in 1997 and the Padma Bhushan in 2001.

He had also received the Dada Saheb Phalke award, highest award of Indian cinema in 1992.

Meanwhile, several organizations, including outlawed group ULFA (I) welcomed the centre's decision.

ULFA (I) C-in-C Paresh Baruah alias Paresh Asom said that his organization has welcomed the PM's announcement.
