Infiltration attempts foiled in Kashmir, nine militants killed

Srinagar, Sept 20 (IBNS): Foiling a major infiltration on Tuesday, the Indian Army said that nine infiltrators in two ongoing gun-battles, along the Line of Control (LoC), in north Kashmir's Baramulla and Kupwara districts, were killed.

A jawan was also killed during the gunfight.

Sources in the defence told IBNS that the Army troopers foiled an intrusion attempt by engaging a major group of infiltrators in a gunfight at Gorital sector of Lachipora village in Uri.

He said that in the gunfire exchange, eight intruders were shot dead by the Army’s 10 Dogra.

Firing is still going on, said he.

A PRO, India Army, based in Srinagar told IBNS: "Encounter is still on in the area and we are expecting some 12 militants have infiltrated into Indian side. Firefight is on and more reinforcement have been dispatched to the area."

Earlier, Indian and Pakistani troopers traded gunfire along the LoC at Kamalkote in Uri sector.

The defence sources alleged that Pakistan violated the ceasefire by firing on Indian posts with light motor arms.

The  charge, however, was denied by Pakistan, according to media reports.

There was no casualty reported on the either side.

Meanwhile, another encounter raged in Nowgam Neeriyan forest sector of Handwara between suspected militants and the Army’s 20 Dogra Unit.

According to Army sources, one militant has been shot dead during the gunfight.

One army Jawan was killed during the gunfight.

Sources said that there could be four to five militants and the gunfight is still underway.

The incidents are occurring just two days after a militant attack in Uri left 18 soldiers martyred.

Four terrorists, believed to have crossed the border from Pakistan, sneaked into the Army camp located near the LoC in Uri and launched the attack on Sunday.

The incident took place when most of the soldiers were asleep.

India has blamed Pakistan for the attack.
