IRCTC's contractual staffers on cease work in Kolkata stations, Duranta passengers suffer

Kolkata, Oct 23 (IBNS): Protesting against a possibility of suspension of work, part of Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC)'s contractual staffers have stopped working at Howrah and Sealdah railway stations in Kolkata since Sunday morning, reports said.

According to reports, protesting staffers, who were appointed for catering food in several Duranta Expresses, stopped working without any notice and left Howrah-Digha and Howrah-Yeshwantpur Duranta Expresses at Howrah station in the morning and Sealdah-Delhi Duranta express at Sealdah station in evening.

They also reportedly staged demonstration at both stations.

During protests, few protesters engaged in a scuffle with the Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel at Sealdah station.

Agitators said that their movement would be continued in future and the same incident would be repeated on Monday.

Due to the protest, passengers of these three premium express trains suffered a lot.

Meanwhile, IRCTC, which is a subsidiary of the Indian Railways that handles the catering, tourism and online ticketing operations of the Indian railways, officials tried to normalize the situation by sending staffers from reserve.

"This incident was unexpected and undesirable. We will never entertain such needless protests," IRCTC (East zone) group's general manager Debashis Chandra told IBNS.

However, the IRCTC has arranged for an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss the situation.
