Jammu and Kashmir: Over Rs 2 lakh counterfeit Indian currency seized in Sopore, 1 held

Srinagar/UNI: Police on Wednesday claimed to have arrested a person alongwith over Rs 2 lakh counterfeited Indian currency in the apple township of Sopore in north Kashmir district of Baramulla.

A police spokesperson said police at a checkpoint established at Goripora Darpora noticed suspicious movement of two people, who tried to flee the spot when asked to stop.

However, he said the police party at the checkpoint chased them and apprehended one person, identified as Ghulam Hussain Gojar Lohar, a resident of Devar Lolab Kupwara though the other accused managed to escape from the spot.

During the search of Lohar, police recovered 2.06 lakh fake Indian currency notes from him. “The accused has been arrested and shifted to Police Station Bomai where he remains in custody,” he said.

During questioning, he said the arrested accused identified the other person, who escaped from the spot, as Ali Mohammad Mir, resident of Janwara Sopore. “Mir is presently at large and efforts are being made to affect his arrest,” he said.

“A case FIR No. 57/2020 under relevant sections of law has been registered at Police Station Bomai and investigation into the matter has been initiated,” he added.
