Jammu police orders investigation into youth's suicide alleging harassment
Jammu/UNI: A day after a youth, booked under POCSO and was on bail, jumped from river Tawi bridge killing himself, Jammu Police on Wednesday ordered probe into the matter.
Police spokesman here said that an incident relating to and video with the heading “Frustrated Youth jumped over Tawi River and ended his life,” has come to notice.
“We are deeply saddened by the unfortunate incident,” said the spokesman adding that a high level enquiry into the matter to ascertain the facts and circumstances of the case headed by SP City North P D Nitya, has been ordered.
“The responsible person (s) will be strictly dealt under law,” he added and said that a case under section 309 IPC has already been registered at Police Station Nowabad and investigation started.
A 24-year-old boy who was on interim bail in POCSO (Protection Of Children from Sexual Offences) Act case on Tuesday jumped from river Tawi bridge and committed suicide alleging harassment by police and health department.
His lawyer, Y M Khan said that the youth identified as Akshay Kumar, who was on interim bail since March 13, his bail was rejected and the court ordered his arrest after rejecting an application seeking extension of his bail period and termed it culprit in POCSO case.
He said that the deceased before jumping from the bridge, shot his video and circulated to his friends and also to the lawyer wherein he alleged that the Court directed the police to get his COVID test done before lodging into the jail.
He said that he was being harassed by the police since morning for getting a Covid test conducted before being sent back to jail and also by the hospital authorities, who asked him to bring a police order for the purpose.”
He however, rued that if police would have taken him to the hospital for the test, he would have been alive and not taken an extreme step as he was already in distress.
