Judge who sentenced Afzal to death slams Indian Opposition
New Delhi, Feb 26 (IBNS): A former high court judge who had sentenced Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru to death has slammed the opposition parties in India for supporting the JNU students who were observing the death anniversary of Guru on the cmpus.
In an interview to NDTV, former judge SN Dhingra, who had heard the 2002 Parliament attack case, said the lawmakers who are now backing the students would have been killed in the terror attack.
"If the group of which Afzal was a part been successful, and many people wanted them to succeed, then those Parliamentarians who are today siding with them, what if 40 -50 of them were killed? The whole scene in India would have been different," Justice Dhingra told the channel.
"So do we want to celebrate Afzal martyrdom day since only 15 common citizens died?" he asked.
Several JNU students have been arrested for glorifying Guru and being part of the event where anti-India slogans were raised, triggering a nationwide debate that sharply divided the people.
JNU student leader Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested first on sedition charges after anti-India slogans were raised inside the JNU campus at an event to observe the death anniversary of Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru.
Later other students, including Umar Khalid, surrendered to police.
Parliament is now witnessing a debate on the issue of JNU episode and the role of the union government.
