Karnataka: Five dead, 72 ill after consuming prasad

Bengaluru, Dec 14 (IBNS): At least five people have died and more than 72 have been hospitalised after consuming prasad at a temple in in Karnataka's Chamarajnagar district today, reports said.

"There is an unfortunate food poisoning incident in Kamgere village. The principal secretary and commissioner has instructed district health officers of Mandya and Mysore to provide help to the Chamarajnagar health administration," ANI quoted Karnataka chief minister H.D. Kumaraswamy as saying.

"The concerned program officer is monitoring calls at 108 call centre and coordinating services of ambulances... Two senior officers are on way from state HQ to coordinate and supervise activities," the chief minister added.

Twelve of the injured are in critical condition.

According to reports, the rice-based offering was distributed to devotees after the foundation-laying ceremony of the temple and people started complaining of stomach ache shortly after consumption.
