Bengaluru: A Lingayat seer of Kunchagal Bande Math Sri Basavlingeshwara Swamy was found hanging in his mutt situated in Ramanagara near here.

The seer allegedly killed himself over blackmail on Monday. This came to light after the police recovered a purported two-page death note by the side of the seer.

The staff of the mutt informed the police after finding the body of the seer. They grew suspicious after they found the puja house closed till 6 am. Usually, the seer woke up by 4 and keep the doors open, besides receiving phone calls.

The police said they have registered a case of abetment to suicide. The seer's post-mortem was done and last rites performed on Monday evening.

In December, the pontiff of Chilume Mutt Basavalinga Swami was also found hanging in a similar fashion. He reportedly died due to deteriorating health and depression.
