Srinagar, Jan 26 (IBNS): Six soldiers were killed while several others are missing after two avalanches hit army posts in Gurez sector of north Kashmir over two days, an army official said on Thursday.

An avalanche hit an army camp last evening in Gurez sector near the Line of Control in which several soldiers were trapped, official said.

“An avalanche struck an army camp in Gurez Sector of Jammu and Kashmir on Jan 25. Rescue operations were immediately launched in extreme bad weather and heavy snow fall,” official said.

The search operation enabled rescue of one JCO and six soldiers while bodies of three soldiers could only be retrieved on Thursday morning.

An Army patrol moving towards a post also went missing after an avalanche hit the same area on Wednesday.

“In another avalanche in the same area yesterday, one Army patrol moving towards the post went missing. The area continues to receive heavy snow fall. Braving inhospitable weather conditions, coordinated rescue operations are in progress in which three bodies could be recovered so far,” official added.
