Kashmir Crime: Man arrested for murdering sister-in-law in Uri
Baramulla, July 7 (UNI) A man was arrested for allegedly murdering his sister-in-law with whom he had an illicit relationship in the border town of Uri in this north Kashmir district.
A police spokesperson on Sunday said that Police Station Uri received information that a woman, Shahida Begum was found hanging in her room apparently after committing suicide on June 29 at Julla Kalgi in Uri.
''A case was registered and investigation was taken up,'' he said.
He said during the course of investigation, the police became suspicious of foul play in the incident following which a Special Investigation Team (SIT) was constituted.
He said Shahida's husband is presently working outside J&K from past about seven months and prior to that was working in Srinagar.
''Various suspects were called for questioning in which one identified as Qadeer Ahmad Khatana, who was the brother-in-law and cousin of Shahida was also questioned,'' he said.
He said during sustained interrogation, Khatana revealed that Shahida did not actually commit suicide but was murdered by him. ''The accused also revealed that he had an illicit relationship with her (Shahida) from past one year,'' he said.
He said that when Shahida returned from her maternal home after staying there for about more than one month, the accused asked her during the day time to keep the door of her room unlocked for him in the night.
''On the fateful night, the accused after having dinner entered in his room as usual along with his wife and kids. After noticing that his wife and kids had slept, the accused entered the room of Shahida Begum at midnight. The duo entered into a heated argument with regard to their illicit relationship and after their verbal altercation, Shahida warned him (accused) that she will make public details about their illicit relationship,” he said.
Feeling insecure by Shahida’s warning and to punish her father whom Khatana accuses of having illicit relationship with his wife, he choked her to death with a scarf. He then hanged the body in her room in order mislead people into believing that she committed suicide, the spokesperson said.
He said a case under relevant sections of law has been registered in Police Station Uri and further investigation is going on.
