Kashmir unrest continues, death toll reaches 58

Srinagar, Aug 8 (IBNS): Authorities on Monday continued curfew and restrictions in parts of Kashmir as life remained paralyzed across the Valley for the 31st consecutive day.

A 17 year old youth, Amir Bashir Lone, of Sedow Shopian from south Kashmir’s Shopian district died at SKIMS on Monday morning, taking the death toll to 58 including that of two policemen.

Since July 8, the curfew, shutdown and protests continued across Kashmir Valley.

Authorities have imposed curfew here in the old city.

Reports said that though the situation remained peaceful all through the day in Srinagar, clashes erupted between youths and the government forces in the evening.

Several protesters were injured when clashes erupted at Lawaypora and HMT, in the outskirts of the city.

Meanwhile, police spokesman said, "Except for the five minor incidents of stone pelting by miscreants on police deployments in Anantnag, Sopore and Bandipora districts, overall situation in the Valley remained normal and under control."

Although restrictions under section 144/CrPC remained in force in the Valley, curfew was imposed in some parts of Srinagar and Anantnag town only.
