Kolkata: Five more BSF jawans who were in IMCT convoy test positive for Covid-19

Kolkata/IBNS: Two days after a driver of the Border Security Force (BSF), who had reportedly drove the pilot car of MHA's Inter-Ministerial Central Team (IMCT)'s convoy in Kolkata weeks ago, was found Covid-19 positive, five more BSF jawans, who were also present in the Central team's convoy, have tested positive for Covid-19, officials said on Tuesday.

A senior BSF official said that 18 personnel of the Central armed force, who had reportedly came in contact with the pilot car driver, were quarantined and their swab samples were sent for Covid-19 test.

"Five of these 18 jawans have tested positive for Covid-19 and they have been admitted to hospital isolation," a BSF official in Kolkata said.

"Our contact tracing is on to find the persons who came in contact with these five BSF personnel recently," the official added.

BSF officials, however, said that these five jawans and escort vehicle's driver, who have tested Covid-19 positive, did not come in contact with any member of the Central team.

In the last two weeks of April, the IMCT convoy visited multiple quarantine facilities, Covid hospitals and containment zones in four red zone districts of West Bengal, including Kolkata, Howrah, North 24 Parganas and East Medinipur, and none of the team was provided PPE or any other protective equipment by the state government.

Meanwhile, a traffic sergeant from Jorabagan Traffic Guard in Kolkata has tested positive for Covid-19, taking the total number of Kolkata Police personnel infected with novel coronavirus so far to seven.
