Kolkata: Police take action in boxer assault case, arrest three

Kolkata, June 28 (IBNS): Three people have been arrested and a probe has been initiated in the case of verbal and physical assault on boxer Suman Kumari at Mominpur in Kolkata on Friday, officials of Watganj police station said.

The boxer on Friday wrote a post on Facebook saying she had been verbally and physically abused by a random youth on the road in Kolkata's Momumpur area.

Suman added that a policeman who was witness to the entire incident did nothing to help her.

This is similar to the June 18 experience of former Miss India Ushoshi Sengupta, who claimed to have been harassed by a group of bikers in Kolkata. Sengupta had also said the police had not been cooperative.

In the latest incident, Suman was on her way to work riding her two-wheeler, when the man, around 25 years of age, allegedly came in front of her and started verbally abusing her and then beat her up "for absolutely no reason".

When she requested the police personnel on duty there who witnessed what had happened, he advised her "to go to the nearest police station".

Suman, however, was in a hurry and went straight to office. She works at the state government's agriculture department.

"Still I have enough faith on Kolkata Police. So I request KP to look into the matter and restore Law and Order as much as possible. Then only my beloved city will be more safe for the women," she had written.
