Kolkata/South 24 Parganas, Jan 16 (IBNS): At least two persons, including a minor, were killed and several others were injured when an over-speeding SUV rammed crowd at Raspunja area under Bishnupur Police Station limits in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, few kilometres away from state capital Kolkata, on Monday evening, officials said.

According to reports, a speeding Mahindra Scorpio, going towards Kolkata's Thakurpukur from Bakrahat in South 24 Parganas, suddenly lost its control and hit several school-students and their guardians, waiting in front of a local school, on Bakrahat Road at around 4:30 pm.

Meanwhile, locals claimed that at least five persons, including four students and a guardian, were killed and seven others were seriously injured after being rammed by the car, which was being driven by a drunk man.

Block Medical Officer of Health (BMOH) of Samali Bureau of Primary Health Care (BPHC) in Bishnupur Block II, Anjan Roy, told IBNS: "After the accident, we received eight persons. Two of them, including a minor and a woman, were declared brought dead and six injured persons were admitted here."

"Three out of the six injured were referred to M.R. Bangur hospital and Chittaranjan National Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, as their health conditions deteriorated, and remaining three were discharged after first aid," the health official further said.

Following the incident, a large number of locals staged demonstration at the area, ransacked the killer SUV and pelted stones aiming at the police force, injuring several policemen, according to reports.

Later, a heavy police force, including Rapid Action Force (RAF), were deployed to the scene and cops restored to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

Police, however, have started investigation into the matter, while neither the driver nor the owner of the SUV has been identified so far.
