LDF wins Kerala Assembly polls convincingly, trouncing the UDF

Thiruvananthapuram, May 19 (IBNS) In the 140-seat Kerala assembly, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) won in 91 seats while Oommen Chandy led UDF managed 47 seats, according to media reports.

CPI-M General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury tweeted, "We salute the people of Kerala for reposing their faith in LDF. Compliments to all comrades, workers and supporters on a great victory. As we have always promised, LDF will provide an honest, clean and development-oriented government to take Kerala to greater heights."

While supporters of LDF were seen celebrating their party's win, the immediate task for the LDF is to choose who will be the next chief minister of Kerala.

Veteran leader and former CM, 93-year-old V.S. Achuthanandan and Politburo member,  71-year old Pinarayi Vijayan, are the strongest contenders for the post, media reported.

CPM, the key member of LDF, will meet in Thiruvananthapuram on Friday to choose their leader, the media said quoting Sitaram Yechury.

This is the first time that BJP has won a seat in Kerala Assembly.
