Lok Sabha 2024: Ajit Pawar’s wife likely to be Supriya Sule's adversary in Sharad Pawar's turf Baramati

Mumbai: Ajit Pawar’s wife Sunetra Pawar is likely to contest against Sharad Pawar’s daughter Supriya Sule in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

According to media reports, Sunetra Pawar may lock horns with Supriya Sule in Baramati, the stronghold of Sharad Pawar.

A vehicle with an audiovisual public address system and posters featuring Sunetra Pawar and her husband Ajit Pawar doing rounds in Baramati gave rise to the speculation that Sunetra Pawar, who is Supriya Sule’s sister-in-law, may fight her in the upcoming polls.

The speculation gained momentum following Ajit Pawar's remarks on Friday, suggesting the possibility of fielding a candidate against his cousin and sitting MP, Supriya Sule.

Although Pawar did not disclose the identity of the candidate, he fervently appealed to Baramati voters to elect a newcomer who would prioritize the "well-being of future generations."

On Saturday, the speculations turned into certainty, though no final announcement has been made yet, as several posters featuring his wife, Sunetra Pawar, came up in the constituency, which has been a turf of the Pawar family and Supriya Sule for over the last 50 years.

Nonetheless, due to Ajit Pawar's defiance against his uncle Sharad Pawar, resulting in a split within the NCP, Baramati is set to experience a clash within the Pawar family during the upcoming general elections.

According to reports, Ajit Pawar's wife has started a publicity campaign in the Baramati constituency and has been engaging with local leaders. Earlier this week, Sunetra Pawar reportedly visited Kanchan Kul, the BJP candidate who ran against Sule in the 2019 Lok Sabha election, reported the Indian Express.

Sharad Pawar secured victory in the Lok Sabha elections from the same constituency in 1984, 1996, 1998, 1999, and 2004.

Ajit Pawar won the Lok Sabha polls from Baramati in 1991. He has been also elected as an MLA for seven consecutive terms from Baramati and currently holds the position.

Supriya Sule has successfully clinched the Baramati Lok Sabha seat in three consecutive elections since 2009.
